Matisyahu - One Day

There's  a new Matisyahu track playing on the radio that I'm digging. We heard it at The Grove when we saw him (K, Carlos, and I) last so I'm not so sure why its taken so long. I'm happy because its got me listening to Matis again.

Matisyahu always has a Positive message. We need that now!

Sonic Youth at the Wiltern Theatre 1/9/2010

Saturday night at the Wiltern was a milestone for me in that it completed my seeing all the bands I've ever wanted to see in Concert. I mean yeah more will come up, but Sonic Youth was the last of the concerts on my all time list. Let me tell you it was worth the wait.
The setlist was heavy on the new album, no problem though, its a great album.
Setlist was;

No Way
Sacred Trickster
Hey Joni
Calming The Snake
Anti-Orgasm
Walkin Blue
Poison Arrow
Stereo Sanctity
Malibu Gas Station
Antenna
Leaky Lifeboat
What We Know
Massage The History

The Sprawl
'Cross the Breeze

Shadow Of A Doubt
Death Valley '69

Carlos and I got there early and ate some not so good Korean food at the only restaurant we could find that had decent beer. Paid for it later. Didn't stop us from enjoying the show though. Our seats were excellent and the air was running. (Last show Carlos and I saw there was the Beastie Boys and I thought I was going to die from Heat Exhaustion)

Here's a video of The Sprawl, their first encore and one of my favs that night. Yeah I wish they played Diamond Sea and Carlos wanted to hear Pink Steam but otherwise it was GREAT!

Next Up: Alice in Chains at the Palladium in February

Arroz con Gandules (VECKZ Sofrito Recioe)

Anytime our family got together, there was Always Arroz con Gandules!

When I was little I would not eat the 'Gandules' and my Mom would pick every single one out
of the Rice. Now that I'm older and have my own kids, often when they ask me to do a simple
thing that I don't feel like doing, i think of my Mom standing there picking out pigeon peas for
her spoiled little hyperactive brat and rethink my actions.
Now I love the 'Gandules'!
This recipe doesn't add Green Olives. I always add them just like my mom did. If you like the
taste of Green Olives add them, if you don't, add them anyway because you may start liking them.
Oh and you can leave out the Ham.

Ingredients:

3/4 lbs green pigeon peas
3 cups of water (used to precook the green pigeon peas)
2 cups of white rice
2 ounces of smoked ham, diced (makes approx. 2/3 cup)
2 tablespoons of corn oil or olive oil
1/2 cup of sofrito
1/4 cup tomato sauce
1 tsp of salt

For soaking the green pigeon peas:
1 quart of water
2 teaspoons of salt

Procedure:

  1. Rinse the rice and set aside
  2. Soak the green pigeon peas in 1 quart of water and 2 teaspoons af salt for 15 minutes.  Then rinse them and cook them in 4 cups of water until they have softened.  Test by picking up one pea in a spoon and squeezing with between two fingers.  You should be able to squeeze it without much effort.  Take care to not over cook them to point where they break apart.
  3. When they are cooked, set aside 3 cups of water used to cook them in.  Rinse the peas and set aside
  4. In a 4 quart cooking pan, add the 2 tablespoons of oil, smoked ham and simmer over moderate heat for 3 minutes.  Then add the sofrito and the tomato sauce and simmer for another 3 minutes as you mix the items.
  5. Raise the heat to moderate-high and add two table spoons of the water that was set aside and the green pigeon peas.  Simmer for 3 minutes as you mix the items.
  6. Raise the heat to high and add the water that was set aside.  Once the water begins to boil, add the rice.  Mix all the items well.
  7. Once the water starts to boil again, reduce the heat to moderate high and cook uncovered until most (but not all) the water has evaporated.
  8. Reduce the heat to low.  Mix the rice again then put the lid on the pan and cook for 15 minutes.
  9. Mix the rice once more and continue to cook until the rice is fully cooked.  You can sample the rice to see if it is fully cooked.  It should be soft to chew.
  10. Makes approximately 6 servings

Can I really email a blog entry in?

Just testing my ability to email in a Blog entry. If this works I am a happy
camper because it is quite the pain in the badunkadunk to log in every
time I want to make a short entry.

I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

Well long time no see! I am going to attempt to keep this up this coming year, one of my many resolutions!

Epicenter 09

Epicenter 09 was last night and it was a great show!
Christian went with Carlos and I which made it a very special show. Our friends Juan, and Justin met us there. Our friend Steve was also there with a group but unfortunately we did not see much of each other.
The highlight of the show was definately Alice in Chains. The new singer sounded more like Layne Staley than Jerry Cantrell sounded like Cantrell this night. The set included two new songs that were both very good. Rooster with the crowd singing along was a highlight.
Linkin Park was good, would've been great except 3/4 of the way through the screamer in the group (forget his name) bought out his new band and killed the mood. After three songs and 5 minutes of boo's, Linkin Park came back out and fixed everything again closing with a great performance of One Step Closer. Juan was out of control rocking to his favorite band.
5 minutes late Tool came out and  Rocked It. MJK hobbled out with a bad leg (an unexpected accident while harvesting grapes during the week) but did not disappoint singing all the while balancing on a crutch.
I have to say I enjoyed them at Coachella more than this evening. The sound was a little too loud and was a little too distorted for my liking. Don't get me wrong, it was Tool live, and it was great. Its just been better. The set was excellent, opening with Jamb

K's Birthday

For Kristin's Birthday the Kids stayed over the Grandparents house and we went to Old Town Riverside and stayed in the Mission Inn. I had gone down there last year with Red Cheese and kept it in the back of my mind to come here with her one day. We stayed in a KILLER room and went to one of those Murder Mystery Dinner's across the street.
This is one corner street view of the hotel. This place was pretty amazing. It was beautiful, with many different architectural designs.

2nd picture is Kand I. Same as usual. She's looking cute and pretty and I look like a kidnapper.
This is the entrance to our room. The room was awesome. Gigantic fireplace. Cathedral Ceilings, Gigantic windows with beautiful views.

This is the view down from the walk out of our room. At least three weddings took place down here while we stayed.
This is the view from the same place but instead of down, across.

Pumpkins at the Gibson

Carlos gave me a pretty awesome birthday present - we went to see the first Smashing Pumpkins show at the Gibson Amphitheatre yesterday. Everyone knows I am a huge Pumpkins fan so this was a big deal for me.
Aside from a surprising, not in a good way, ending, I really enjoyed it.
The seats as you can see from the image above were PHENOMENAL.
1st, there was a pretty enormous, and I mean like enormous in a very bad way, guy 4 seats down from us that definately took a little too much of something. He was sweating more than Daffy Duck on the opening of Duck Hunting Season. If you've never seen a 300 pound mental patient getting sensual then lucky you! He knew the words to all the songs and danced a SLOW DANCE to every one of them. The poor girl next to him had the switch seats with her boyfriend to get away from him. That aside.
Now the ending, presented as an Encore was the whole band doing Close To You on KAZOO's. Yes Kazoo's.
Do you know how messed up it is to hear the greatest rendition of MAYONAISE, BULLET WITH BUTTERFLY WINGS and CLOSE TO YOU on Kazoo's on the same night. Not good.

Here is Mayonaise last night

Great show!!!

Matisyahu @ the Grove

Kristin, Carlos and I went to see Matisyahu @ the Grove of Anaheim. If you've enver seen a show there and soemone you like is playing, go! Great sound and great views.
Matisyahu off course was 'Off the Hook' He had several guests with him, no one I ever heard of, but they were all good. If you don't know Matisyahu, he's a hassidic jewish rapper from NYC. He played some new stuff and if the rest of the disc is the same, expect a great new disc come March 09. Matis sported some green sneaks that I want. He had something going on with the hair, check out the YouTube.

Flobots opened and were good live (disc for me, not so good). Kristin rested her feet for a while and met the singer at the back for a little, got a high five. Flobots have a girl on violin that is a highlight for sure.

NIN in LA better than last time

Los and I went to the NIN's show at the Forum and it was the best one everrrrrrrr! I've seen Nine Inch Nails 3 times now and this was the best. Nine Inch Nails always has great imagery and this was no exception. A giant screen hung in front of the band and moved to the music, it was awesome!

Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl

Went to see Radiohead, I may be ruined. It was Great

I know, I look like i just escaped from an institution. God I have to lose weight!

Slightly Stoopid Slightly Stunk

Bad news, Slightly Stoopid sounded terrible! The Sound Guy was way off he seemed to fix it Slightly about half way through but that was Slightly too late so I have to give it a big thumbs down. They were great at Coachella though and they would have been great here if the sound guy could've gotten it right, bummer. Oh and the place was full of DB's. There was a mini Luiz next to us that was more entertaining than the show.
